Most of us have heard of the Diamond Head Hike, and even Koko Head Crater, but if you’re visiting Hawaii or are a resident here, and you want to see the more “off-the-beaten-path” side of Oahu, check out some of our top picks for hidden hikes on the island. This guide will give you some top choices for hikers of all abilities. Hang loose and hike on!
Maunawili Falls
This fairly easy Oahu hiking trail has breathtaking views of the valley, and a fun 20 ft. Oahu waterfall to jump into at the end. Take caution while jumping in, and swim at your own risk! It will take you about an hour to hike this mile and a half trail, so make sure you’re equipped with some quality hiking boots. It can get a little wet at times since the Maunawili Falls trail backs up into the Koolau Mountains, so be prepared to trek through some muddy areas. Flip flops are not advised.
Crouching Lion
This small rock formation sits above the Crouching Lion Inn & Restaurant. This isn’t an all day hike. It’s just a quick way to get a nice view if you happen to be out near Kaaawa on Oahu. Expect to break a sweat though, and bring more water than you think you’ll need. It takes about 30-40 minutes to get to the top of the Crouching Lion, but the views are impressive, so you might end up staying on the mountain longer than you expect.
The Kuli`ou`ou Ridge
Trail
This 2.25 mile trail rises almost 1800 feet, before peaking on the spine of the Ko`olau Ridge. It’s a great hiking spot, but it is steep. It’s worth it, though, because your climb will be rewarded with spectacular views.
Olomana Trail
Steep, narrow, and sometimes frightening, this hike offers great views of Kailua, the mountains, and the ocean. The Olomana Hike is one of the top hikes in Oahu if you are looking for a challenging hike with unbelievable views. It is only about 1.5 miles to the first peak (there are three in total), but there is more than 1,000 feet of elevation gain, and some parts have drop-offs on both sides of the trail. Ropes have been added in a few places to prevent you from slipping. If you aren’t afraid of heights and are comfortable with some moderate rock climbing, then the Olomana hike should be at the top of your list.

Have done the hikes to Koko Head and DIamond Head before and loved them, especially for sunrise. Which ones listed would be good for children?
Maunawili Falls is definitely one we’ve seen families go one. Steer clear of the others when hiking with children because they tend to be dangerous!
The mini Crouching Lion hiking is simple & easy. What is awesome about it is that it gets you some excellent views of the great Pacific Ocean and Kahana Bay. Awesome! I’ve got all the reasons to be at Crouching Lion.
A beautiful view! I wouldn’t necessarily say easy though haha. It’s kind of scary!
My last trip to Hawaii mostly focused on visiting beaches! My girlfriend and I will try hiking this time!
The hikes definitely give Hawaii a different feel! Lots of adventures!
That’s true! Hiking will never be boring!
